Justin Muzinich Joins CFR as Distinguished Fellow

The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) welcomes Justin Muzinich, former deputy secretary of the U.S. Treasury Department, to its David Rockefeller Studies Program as a distinguished fellow.

At CFR, Muzinich’s work will focus on topics related to national security and economic policy, and he will contribute to the overall work of the Maurice R. Greenberg Center for Geoeconomic Studies.

While serving as deputy secretary, Muzinich was also responsible for the roles of undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence and undersecretary for domestic finance, managing the divisions at Treasury responsible for national security, financial policy and financing the U.S. government. From 2017 to 2018, he served as counselor to the U.S. secretary of the treasury.

Muzinich played a leading role in Treasury’s tax reform effort and in responding to the economic crisis caused by COVID-19. His national security responsibilities included the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States and a wide variety of National Security Council matters. Muzinich represented the United States at Group of Seven, Group of Twenty, and Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development meetings, and served on the board of the National Counterterrorism Center.

Immediately before entering government service, Muzinich served as policy director for Governor Jeb Bush’s (R-FL) 2016 presidential campaign, taught at Columbia Business School, and was president of Muzinich & Co., an international investment firm. He began his career at Morgan Stanley.

Muzinich earned his AB from Harvard College, his JD from Yale Law School, and his MBA from Harvard Business School.
